Southeast Drift's Triple Threat: Round 3.

Well, first thing is first I suppose: an introduction. My name is Bryant and I like to take photos. I'm still relatively new to photography as a whole, but I am a fast learner and study techniques used by others and incorporate them into my own style. I learned how to photograph on a Canon 40D and from the start of it, I knew I'd like to pursue photography as more than a hobby. The first time I photographed any drifting though was at Formula D in May. During both days of FD, I surprised even myself. Since then, I've had a birthday and received a Canon T1i to use as my primary camera. I think that is a sufficient introduction as we're all here for the coverage of Southeast Drift's Triple Threat Round 3.

First of all, a big thanks to Marcos and all the guys at Southeast Drift for hosting these events at Turner Field. If you've never been to one, I highly recommend going. The atmosphere is always very friendly, the people are awesome and understanding of each other. If anyone is wondering how to hold a local drift event, this is exactly how to do it. The only downside to going out to one of these, if you're like me, is getting sunburned, but even that is just a small price to pay for what can be a great time in the parking lots at Turner Field.

Once again the guys at Southeast Drift put on a phenomenal event. Having worked the night before I was a little late to the party but apparently it all worked out due to a push back in the day's schedule. But alas I was able to get some shots in between the videos I was also shooting. As I stepped out of the car onto the gravel that surrounds the track I immediately felt like I was swimming, except there was no water to be found.

Marcos coordinated with Atlanta's own ATLFreestyle to give the crowd some very nice entertainment while the drifters prepped the cars for the next set of runs. I have heard a lot about ATLFreestyle from a good friend, and his words were nothing less than spot on on how good these guys were at what they did. Darrick Stafford and Chad Cohran tore up the asphalt, and by the end of the day they had a 4-wheeled beast join in on the shenanigans as well! This event by far exceeded my expectations, I just only wish there were more people.....maybe this post, photo's and soon to come video will show you just how much fun one of these days really is, and next time *cough*July 31st in Nashville*cough* you will come out and enjoy!

I must say Hotlanta has recently lived up to its name quite a bit recently. After having spent the say at SED downtown, then coming out to the suburbs on Sunday for this event, it was like death. The heat index was over 100* with humidty, and there was little or no breeze. But that didn't stop any of the attendees. This was my first year coming out to the event and I have to say it was probably the best show/meet so far.

It was extremely relaxed, everyone there had a great attitude and the real feeling of the car scene could be felt. It wasn't like some meets where domestics are over there, imports here, fitment way over yonder, and the hp cars on the opposite end. This meet was an invite only, and I have to say a couple of the people I talked to thought it was a fitment only meet.

This was wrong; this meet was about people who are the local car scene, who do things on their own accord and don't care what others think. They don't look for approval, they do as they please and it shows. Their cars tend to have an influence on those that see them. I asked Kashime, one of the organizers of the event to give me his thoughts/purpose behind the event and he left me with this,

"SKF was meant to showcase some of the best we in GA and the southeast as a whole have to offer the world. For far too long the rest of America has looked down on us and left us in the shadows. Ever since 2008 when I started this meet the scene in GA has become a lot more like a family affair. And there have been more GA magazine features than ive ever seen in the past. Since 2008 we've been bringing people together. We've brought folks that never really had or took pictures of nice vehicles and mated them with some of the best photographers in the country. And in turn folks that were never recognized before are known countrywide. I've seen little names on the internet blow up. It's a real life social networking meet with good food and good people."

Kashime is known on the forums as "Dirty Octopus", so be sure to keep an eye out for him! The other organizer goes by the name of "JITB" and runs SouthRn FresH, his real name is Joseph though. His view on the event is that "These meets start big things in the car scene for atlanta. But the previous public meets are open to bring new faces into the mix. Also this previous meet had an alternative purpose to help out a friend as well"

Kash & Joseph also did a little raffle to pass out some Posture shirts, stickers, and Zen Motors tag frames. I didn't make a post about it, but a month ago maybe there was a local car guy that got into an accident with his Red S2k named Widdy. Widdy lost his arm, and was ejected from the car during the accident, it was a horrible thing for anyone to go through. All the proceeds from the raffle went straight to him to help with the medical bills (a helicopter was involved, its stacks of bills). Once again Southeast Drift has seemingly out-done themselves. This years event was the day after Formula Drift, I had my doubts that many people were going to show after a full day up at Road Atlanta, however after arriving at 8am and being throughly surprised, then by the end of the day it being more packed than I have ever seen I was impressed. This event was another practice round for the SEDrift guys and it was in my opinion the best, there was a DJ spinning keeping tunes going, the NOS ladies kept the energy up, and guest appearances by KeepDriftingFun.com as well as many divers including Chris Forsberg, Matt Powers, Dennis Mertzanis, Pat Mordaunt, Tony Brakiohiapa, Cyrus Martinez, and Andy Sapp. So without further delay here are the photo's I snapped at the event. And remember folks, keep drifting fun! haha

Formula Drift Saturday's Coverage

Saturday was just about as insane as Friday, but with more people, sicker cars, and a lot more NOS. The Hellaflush Fatlace 1of1 show was impressive to say the least. The drifting was just as great, and with all the crazy 3/4 rotors and wide open v10's etc this year, it was a melody to my ears. Now on to the photo's as normal,

Friday was an epic day filled with watching the pro-am competition, and checking out what this years car were like in person. The crowd was huge for a Friday here in Atlanta, I can remember last year that the judges bank of seating had a couple tents and chairs, and the far side was just a few scattered people, this year, the judges bank was almost full and the far bank had just as many people it seemed. Import Showdown Spring 2010 - GADSM.org

It was a pretty good day, i expected rain to be honest but I hitched a ride down to BFE and took some pictures. GADSM.org put on the event as a non-profit, sending all the collected money back into the event. I was very impressed with the event as well as the competitors. Props to GADSM.org, and everyone who raced!

Import Alliance - Spring Edition

Downtown Atlanta was taken over by imports this weekend. The Georgia World Congress Center parking deck was the central location for all of the cars, and after a bit of rolling around downtown trying to find the place, it happened...my mind was blown by all the nice cars and epic amounts of people. I'll leave the pictures for the talking for now, I hope a good time was had by all and keep checking the blog, there will be a few more updates soon!

Southeast Drift have been putting on events for local drifters to get out there and do it the legal way. They have seemingly blown up and sold out all the driver slots for this past event. Now on to what you are all here for:

So after hearing of a couple guys are headed out for some drifting at a little sanctuary here in Atlanta somewhere, I had to stop by and see what these two were up to. Its an interesting setting to be sitting in your car in a somewhat hidden empty parking lot just waiting for "two 240's" to show up. And then I see them, a faded gold s14 with mismatched body kit, and a carbon fiber hood covered in duct tape to hide the rivets and damage to it. Then a dark blue s13 followed suit with its fair share of body rash. Here is the result of the two's long nights working on the cars, as well as their ability to make the things slide around in a manner than can make even the most primitive driver seem like they could have a shot at doing to same with little effort. The gold 240 belonged to Juan, aka Jay and the blue to David.

How long have you been drifting?

J: i have been drifting since it started......jk. ive only just started about a year and a half ago and i still suck lol.

D: i think i have been drifting about a year and a half

Whats your current setup on your 240? And why'd you choose it?

J: sr20det, gt2871r, greddy easy install cams, 550cc sard injectors, z32 maf, megan manifold, megan dump tube, apexi full exhaust, greddy pro b spec 2 boost controller, safc2, greddy radiator, greddy front mount intercooler. suspension wise godspeed coilovers, godspeed rear traction,toe, and upper controler arms. it rides really well. this is a very easy car to mod and do things on and its a cheap rwd car so that prob has a lot to do with why i have it lol

D: in my 240 i have a sr20det with an s15 tubo tuned my mainstream performance, making 270whp, and i actually got the turbo for free from a friend b/c it was "blown" turned out it was perfect haha.

What was in the car originally when you got it?

J: lol a ka came in these car but i bought mine with a sr20 already in it so i cheated lol

D: the car was in Boston and i bought it with a ka24de, nothing special, then put my sr in it!

Why did you swap it out for an SR20 instead of something with a bit more torque like an RB or an LS1?

J: oh goodness. this can become a very heated question very quick so im gunna make this short and sweet. i love the sound of rbs. they sound sick. i like ls1 but thats a little to much work. sr20 is a straight drop in. availability of parts is greater. its just an easy motor to work on. if i had to choose a motor id prob choose rb26 or 2jz but thats prob not gunna happen anytime soon lol

D: sr20=a reliable motor, these motors are beasts without the torque!

What do you want to accomplish with your drifting? pro's or just hobby?

J: right now its just a hobby. maybe one day if i can pick up a sponsor to help with my car and got out there more maybe i would have a better chance lol but for right now i just love doing it because its fun.

D: Honestly i drift to free my mind, im always looking forward to that sunday drifting, cool breeze suns out and chilling with friends, what could be better then that?

How did you find out about/get into drifting?

J: well i had a accord that i use to try to powerslide/tray sliding (fail lol) but its always been there. its funny cause i actually had no intension's of drifting the 240 when i got it. i got it because it was already swapped and it was a pretty quick car that has plenty of potential. i was really into drag racing. then one night i was out with a couple of my friends david, jj, todd and they were pushing me to drift so what could i do lol. and thats how it pretty much started lol

D: My brother and friends really, i used to skate for like 7 yrs, while everyone else quit and moved on to drifting i was left skateboarding sooo i had to move on too.

What do you have left to throw at the car?

J: i want to finish the kit and paint. motor wise im pretty set unless i blow something like headgasket or something. suspension i would like to get steering knuckles and better tune like a nistune or power fc.

Whats your 9 to 5 (job)?

J: lol i actually teach karate. ive been teaching it since 04. i love it. just to think that i can help a child grow and learn to better themselves is just awesome. but my job is more like 130 till 900 lol. i love my hours. stay up late, get up late.

D: College is my 9-5 job.

Would you rather have a 360 or a PS3?

J: since i have a ps3 i have to say ps3. lol im a huge fan of blueray movies.

D: I got that xbox 360 on deck son, Cod6 all day!

Whats something you'd like to see happen to the sport of drifting?

J: i would really like it to see it explode. it has really grown in the past few years uncontrollably so its just awesome.

D: I'd LOVE to see it blow up.

Why do you think drifting is still underground?

J: its starting to come out. i still have to explain what drifting is to some people and when i do i get that "hell we use to do that on dirt roads back when i was young now you guys just call it something different" lol i always laugh cause drifting at speed with switch backs is totally different. anybody can drift there fwd car on a turn on a dirt road lol. its just an amazing car sport. its something that has caught my interest immediately after seeing it and it will to others.

D: I think drifting is still underground b/c no one understands it, anyone can go out and do stupid donuts in a mustang...but thats NOT drifting, so i think people figure thats all it is, but once they finally see what the fuck is up, then they tend to change their views.

May I say welcome again. Roots Photography is a collaboration between James Hunsucker and Nikki Hart. We have decided to start this blog in order to show people the grassroots of motorsports. To also cover events around the southeast and share them with you, as well as do interview with locals who are doing their thing in the grassroots. So be on the lookout for new posts constantly.
